Filmmaking popularity on the decline?

Is the popularity of filmmaking on the decline? Yes it is, according to Google trends.

The graph below shows the number of web users who have searched for the word 'filmmaking' on google. It seems less and less people are searching for the profession each year.

Another interesting statistic related to the above graph is the regions from which people are seeking information about filmmaking on the internet. Amazingly, India is at the top spot with a comfortable margin and 2 of its cities - New Delhi and Mumbai figure on the list.

As you can see, the top filmmaking city of America is Irvine, beating Los Angeles! Both are in the state of California though.

But is the filmmaking trend really going downhill? Or are people getting smarter and searching more targetted stuff like film schools, film training etc? Lets see:

As you can see above, that does not seem to be the case. Even the popularity of film schools seems to be on the decline!

Maybe people have just become more practical and instead of wasting time on the internet they are actually going out to shoot their films! Hopefully :)

Interesting research. I can't think about any reasons why the drop would be so dramatic. Even the location of the most popular film cities seems a bit unusual to me.

Thank you for sharing this.

Kind of interesting, but I don't think it means anything. Afterall, most filmmakers settle of websites after a while and I, for example, would never need to google 'filmmaking', although maybe I would have when I was younger.

Don't you think it's because the technology is so much more accesable? It seems to be within our reach. Especially with what apple has done, people can really go out there and shoot their own stuff. It isn't such a mystery anymore with how to do it. I know with some of my clients, they will say to me, cant you just take my handycam and go out there and shoot my commercial. Well, not that simple, I still try and emphasize, composition and storytelling. Really people need a lesson in Producing, the organization of time and money. But none the less I hope that, this is due to the availability of technology. www.forwardfilms.net

I definitely feel that the renaissance is reaching it's peak.

Great research. It is bizarre how those search terms are on the decline. With the popularity of DSLR cameras I would have through the opposite.

This issue has become a pervasive theme during the conference that the representatives have unanimously decided to do something radical to address the problem.
